Difficult Conversations

Hampshire County Council was looking for a partner to help them reduce the level of sickness absence across their Library Services. Their immediate objective was to urgently provide a series of interactive and high impact training programmes which would increase their line managers’ self-awareness, confidence and ability to pro-actively lead, discuss and manage sickness absence with their staff.

MaST International proposed a highly interactive series of workshops using MaST’s specialist actor facilitators. The programme included a mix of activities including theory input and case studies brought to life by our actor facilitators.

The very real case studies were based on research involving HCC's senior management team and input from managers who would participate in the training. The research, design and delivery phases (during which we trained more than 50 managers) were conducted in under three weeks, in order to meet the quick turnaround that HCC desired.

The training included theory input, interactive case studies designed for the programme, and facilitated discussion in plenary as well as work in smaller groups each facilitated by an actor-facilitator.

The smaller group work focussed on the real and demanding conversations that the managers needed to have in their workplace. In these break-out rooms, the managers prepared and practiced their conversations with the actor-facilitators, who provided 1-to-1 coaching and gave them targeted feedback to help them further hone their skills and confidence.

Besides theory input and practice we ensured the training initiative was also used as a platform for managers to share experiences and have the opportunity to learn from their colleagues.

The training initiative was extremely well received by the managers as evidenced by subsequent evaluation and requests by numerous managers for more training of this kind.

Managers say they now feel much more confident and better equipped with a range of tools and frameworks to deal with a variety of difficult and sensitive conversations they need to have.

The success of our intervention is currently being shared with other areas of Hampshire County Council with a view to using MaST for further learning and development needs during 2016.
